A gastrointestinal endoscopic surgeon, Marcelo Kuperschmit, MD, FACS, is the inventor of the Kuperschmit technique, a means of repairing hernias that offers distinct advantages over traditional operations.
Marcelo Kuperschmit, MD, FACS, belongs to several organizations to maintain his professional affiliations and credentials. He is a member of the Arlington County Medical Society and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He has also joined the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and is licensed to practice in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Dr. Kuperschmit pioneered a surgical technique known as the laparoscopic extra-peritoneal hernia procedure. This surgery is less painful than conventional open methods and often allows for outpatient surgery and rapid recovery (around one week). Marcelo Kuperschmit uses the small camera of the laparoscope to visualize the area of concern with only a small incision. He has done this minimally invasive operation over 1,000 times.
Marcelo Kuperschmit came to America from his birthplace of Argentina, where he studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires Medical School. After serving as a fellow in general surgery at the university’s hospital, Dr. Kuperschmit moved to the United States, where he accepted a fellowship in cardiovascular surgery at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Moving to general surgery, Marcelo Kuperschmit went through the residency process to become a clinical instructor, a job he still holds.
From 1998 to 2005, Dr. Kuperschmit held the chairmanship of the Department of Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center. He also joined Metropolitan Surgical Associates. Marcelo Kuperschmit is on the active staff of Arlington Hospital and the associate staff of Columbia Reston Hospital and Inova Fairfax Hospital, all in Virginia. He was the first surgeon in the state to perform a laparoscopic cholecystotomy, or removal of the gall bladder. Dr. Kuperschmit also performs breast cancer surgery and varicose vein surgery using the VNUS closure method. In his leisure time, Dr. Kuperschmit donates time to the Arlington Free Clinic.
